a ‘Dance with Visual Practice’ graduate from University of Brighton, has had a solid dance background. Doing Ballet from a young age, beginning Contemporary and Flamenco dance in her teens and with a growing interest in performance and Clowning (having studied with Angela De Castro, Rose English, Jonathan Kay, Gerry Flannagan and Avner the Eccentric) Aila has developed into a very confident and experienced physical performer.
Aila is also one half of the established cabaret and street theatre partnership Swizzleshaker (Arts Council Funded spring 2005) with circus performer, Dave Chameleon. They have performed their unique shows that combine circus, comedy and dance at the Circus Space cabaret, National Theatre, European street theatre festivals and on cruise ships. Inspired to work together after they began Lindy Hop in 2001 and have since danced in music videos for KT Tunstall and George Michael.
Aila’s varied career has involved working as a cobbler, sewing lingerie, costumes and inflatable structures as well as teaching and choreographing for community dance groups Green Candle and Oily Cart. Aila’s love of variety continues as she is still a core member London based Flamenco group Aire Flamenco and also assists Scott Penrose as a magician's assistant
has studied tap and acrobatic dance since the age of three. Upon graduating from Sheffield Hallam University (with a BA Hons in Fine Art, Combined and Media Studies), she won a commission to create costumed characters for performances at several northern nightclubs. This went on to form part of her Prince’s Trust funded business: Agent Incognito.
In around 2000 Jo discovered Lindy Hop and honed her dance-floor skills whilst in South Korea teaching English. Since this she has performed with Rawhead Dance Theatre and in films and TV such as Picadilly Jim, Vera Drake and Blackpool, taught dance for organizations like Glastonbury Festival and Camden Council, as well as taking up DJing for dancers and club-goers.
In addition to this, Jo has a Masters Degree in Art Theory from Chelsea College of Art and has an extensive CV as a visual artist exhibiting her art works (paintings, photographs, videos and sound pieces) around the world from Tokyo to Peckham! She also lectures in fashion history and theory at London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London. (2003 – present).
